In brown ink, in Arabic numerals, in the top right corner of the written surface. The original foliation presents a number of mistakes: no. 127 was originally written twice on consecutive folia, but the second has later been struck out and replaced in pencil with the correct 128; the next page was missed out in the original foliation, and no. 128 written on the folio after that, later corrected to 130; the corrections continue until f. 138 (mistakenly foliated as 136), while from the next folio the original foliation in ink surprisingly continues correctly with no. 139.

Note: Simple full-page ruling with double vertical justifications and additional horizontal ruling of one line in the upper and one in the lower margins; the extension of the horizontals suggests the index “I” in the Leroy-Sautel formula, 22I1, where the horizontals in the upper and lower margins extend from one margin of the page to the other, while the ruling lines (varying between 17 and 20) begin from the inner vertical and end approximately and not neatly somewhere in the external margin after the outer vertical. The ruling appears traced singly on the bifolia and applied to the hair side, thus creating the following pattern, corresponding to Leroy system 1: <><><><>. Interlineum: 5/6 mm.

Hand 1

(f. 20v)Upright fluid minuscule of regular module, with occasional use of ‘boules’ or hooks at apices such as lambdas, taus or iotas, and a mannered curved hook in the ‘nose’ of zetas (written as enlarged 3). Torallas Tovar compared the hand to the Reggio style of Nikolaos (RGK I, no. 524: sample from Vat. gr. 1646), but the ms lacks the pointed quality of this scribe; rather, the general features (upright deltas, general neatness) fit better the example of Reggio script by Georgios (RGK I, no. 129: Vat. gr. 974), though again not exactly in the details, and again is being overall rounder in appearance. Nevertheless, these similarities confirm a dating to the first quarter of the twelfth century and suggest a Southern Italian provenance for this ms. Cf. also Loukas (RGK II, no. 334: Paris. gr. 790). A few lines are written in a more cursive style (scholarly hand?) at (f. 20v), ll. 6-17, with increased abbreviation and a majuscule form of beta as well as open omegas: these lines could still be by the same hand, though. Occasionally the lower stroke of phi is prolonged through several lines into the lower margin, e.g. (f. 19v), (f. 77v), (f. 79r), (f. 125v). Rubrication in carmine; simple enlarged initials throughout; the beta at (f. 55r) is unusually enlarged and embellished with dots and crosses.

Description:

(f. 8v): headband “ad intaglio in negativo” in carmine ink with a scrolling tri-lobed motif and knots along the frame. (f. 21v): headband “ad intaglio in negativo” in carmine ink with geometrical and phytomorphic patterns and two symmetrical stylized palmettes at the top outer corners. Simple undulating text-dividers at (f. 106r), (f. 159r). Other headbands may have been planned but were never executed, leaving a number of blanks as detailed above.

Origin

11th–12th c. The script would suggest a Southern Italian provenance, from Reggio Calabria or Messina. A liturgical analysis of the monastic rite, and in particular the comparison with Vat. gr. 1969 according to Wawryk, confirms this hypothesis. f. 21r: there is a scratched inscription (as well as probatio pennae) in the blank portion of the page (after l. 7) that may be worth examining with UV-light.

Provenance

Previous shelfmarks: Aurivillius. Ups. gr. 7, olim ms. Esc. Δ. V. 11. Post. H. VI. 28. Sparv. gr. 48. On the front paste-down, there are several notes recording the content, and one the sale of the ms. At the centre, there is a note in Greek, perhaps quite recent: σχηματολόγιον·. At the top left corner, there is another note in Greek, an abbreviation in majuscule letters, ‘ΤΑΞ. ΕΚΛ.’. Under the large writing in Spanish, traces of a Greek note can also be made out. The Spanish note says: ‘J. G. Sparvenfeldt / en Toledo en el / mes d abril / 1690’.
