Binding
Medieval binding. White leather over wooden boards. The primary binding is covered by a secondary cover in chamois with overhang, see Szirmai (1999), pp. 165–166. 4 double raised bands and endbands. Brass bosses in corners and centre on both covers. Long-strap fastening on two sides, fastening plates with pin on LCO. Spine, in ink: ‘12’; in ink: ‘48’; ink on label: ‘No 38 Expositiones Epistolarum Dominicalium Fratris Johannis Merkeliin’; stamped in gold: ‘A 207’; ink on label: ‘38’; ink on label: ‘e 30. 4. 13.’. LCO, top of cover, in brown ink: traces of writing. LCI: pastedown consists of parchment leaf containing an unidentified theological text, possibly Thomas Aquinas, written in a Gothic cursiva antiquior. RCI: pastedown consists of parchment bifolium containing four columns of an unidentified thelogical text of uncertain date. (Both fragments are partially covered by the secondary cover. However, this cover is not glued to the the pastedown, which makes it possible to slightly lift it to read most of the text on the fragments.)
Origin
15th century, second half
Provenance
Origin and early provenance unknown. The manuscript has belonged to the National Library since at least the 18th century.
Two of the signa on the spine correspond to older library catalogues. ‘38’ corresponds the catalogue of 1734 (U 125e); ‘e 30. 4. 13.’ to Hammarsköld's catalogue from the 19th century (U 133). The signa ‘12’ and ‘48’ have not been identified.
